Introduction

During this project me and three other students worked with Saluta, a occupational health care company. The main problem that Saluta was facing was that they only worked with analog processes and wanted a more efficient way of working. The solution we came up with was a digital prototype where the employees of Saluta could write down and store the results of each and every patient for different companies. With this solution they would be able to work more efficiently and free up additional time and resources. Saluta aims to keep personal contact with their clients, therefore we went for a solution that does not take away the focus from the patient. The solution should also be easy to use and manageable in different environments. In short, what we wanted to do was to help Saluta sort their data in a more efficient and direct way.

Down below I will describe our process from researching the topic, defining the problem and finally showing some solutions we came up with. If you want to read the full report it is available by pressing the big orange button (PS. It is in Swedish).

Research

This problem was solved with methods such as Goal Directed Design and Service Design. The design process began with a competetive analysis to see what other companies are offering and what Saluta could benefit from. Interviews were performed with both the nurses at Saluta and the co-workers from companies who have experienced occupational health care. The next step in the process was Service Design through methods such as SWOT, PEST and Stakeholder mapping. These methods helped the group map out what Saluta needed to improve and what to especially focus on.

Salutas Core Competences - What makes them unique and how can they satisfy their customers need. With the help of the Core Competences the team could identify that Saluta offers more of a personal service than other companies They also preform their medical examinations on the spot at the company, and they also offer specific examinations depending on what branch of industry the company works within.

Salutas Strength Weaknesses Opportunities Threats - The SWOT analysis helped us identify what Saluta is good at, where they can improve, what they should be working towards and what they should look out for. One big concern was that Saluta is only working with pen and paper (analog) and do not use any digital system for collecting and storing data. If they would digitize one step at a time it would free up resources to do other things, such as taking new opportunities and getting more customers.

Salutas Stakeholders - The stakeholder map helped us identify who is working with Saluta on a direct and indirect level. With this in mind it helped us to understand how Saluta would be affected if something would happen to for example their suppliers or their partners. If they digitize their way of working, how could it affect the connection to Salutas different partners.

UX Problem

The main design problem that we identified was about security and confidentiality. For example, who has access to what kind of data. We wanted the co-workers at the companies that Saluta was working with to feel secure and safe while answering the forms and questions. If it was clear that they were anonymous while answering it would lead to more truthful answers. We also wanted to improve the current way of working for Saluta to be more effective and direct, whilst not taking away focus from the patients. The solution should also make the current way of working more effective and automatic.

Another thing we wanted to create and include was a personal compilation for the coworkers. This would include all their personal values and measurements, and what they can do to improve them if they are in the danger zone. We did not decide to focus on this as the MVP (Minimum Viable Product) should only include the form for the nurse to fill out.

Final Thoughts

This project was very interesting, challenging and exciting to work with. I learned a lot about healthcare and how to design for it. Security and safety was at utmost importance for the co-workers at the companies, whilst efficiency and explicitly were the important parts for the nurses at Saluta. During this project I also expanded my understanding about how to design for different user needs. We had to design for the nurses at Saluta, the co-workers at the companies and the management at the companies.

Even though we focused mostly on the nurses and co-workers, we still had to have all the different parts in mind. The most challening part for me was to understand the complexity of the healthcare system. I had no prior experience or have never worked with healthcare or things like it before. Even though it was very challening, I still definitely thought it was a fun learning experience.
